PHI Breach Notification

The University of Utah and University Health Care are committed to protecting the privacy and security of protected health information (PHI). A new federal law now mandates the reporting of breaches to patients and research participants. As such, a new University Rule is being implemented that requires reporting of a breach of protected health information to the Campus Help Desk (801-581-4000) or the Health Sciences Help Desk (801-587-6000) as soon as possible, but no later than 24 hours after the discovery of the breach. Immediate reporting is necessary to comply with the 60- day time limit for notification of patients and research participants about the breach of their PHI.
Our goal is to prevent data breaches by ensuring appropriate safeguards are in place.
